Awni Ahmed Abd al-Rahman al-Khatib (Abu Khaldun; February 24, 1950 - October 26, 2020) is a Palestinian academic . He held several positions, including President of Hebron University in 2009, and President of Palestine National University in Bethlehem from 2015 until his death.

His life 

Awni Al-Khatib was born in 1950 in the town of Kafr Thulth , east of Qalqilya .  His father is Ahmed Abdel Rahman Al-Khatib and his mother is Maryam Mustafa Othman Al-Yassin. He later moved to reside in the city of Hebron. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in preparatory medicine (chemistry and biology) in 1978 from the University of Utah , and obtained a master’s degree from the same university in 1980, and worked as a teaching assistant there from 1978 to 1981. Then he obtained a doctorate in inorganic chemistry in 1985 from the University of Florida , and worked as a teaching assistant there from 1981 to 1985. [5] He was a visiting researcher at the University of Oklahoma from 1988 to 1989, then became an associate professor in 1995.  He was also a visiting researcher at the University of California From 2007 to 2008, he obtained the degree of Professor Doctor in 2010. 

Awni had worked at Hebron University since 1986, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Science there from 1987 to 1995, then Vice President of the University for 4 years, and then President of Hebron University from 2009 to 2012. In 2015 he became President To Palestine National University in Bethlehem, where he continued his position until his death.  He was a member of the Palestinian Higher Education Council, and the National Commission for Accreditation and Quality for Higher Education. He also received awards in leadership and scientific research, and has published more than thirty research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. 

His death 

He died on October 26 , 2020 AD, corresponding to Rabi’ al-Awwal 9, 1442 AH , at the age of 70, after a two-year struggle with cancer . His body was held at the Othman bin Affan Mosque near Karantina in the city of Hebron and buried in the Karantina Cemetery. A number of Palestinian media agencies, figures, universities and schools mourned him.
